Kang Run-zhi is a famous calligrapher from the Kang family, a renowned calligraphy family in Toucheng, Yilan. His great-grandfather, Kang Yan-quan (1908-1985) won the first prize in the national calligraphy competition held in Japan during the Japanese colonial era, earning him the title of “Best Calligrapher in Yilan.” His grandfather Kang Jie-gui (1928-1996) applied the art of calligraphy to plaques to better preserve calligraphy works for future generations, attaining the title of “Best Plaque Calligrapher in Yilan.” His father Kang Huai (1959-), though low-key, has continued the family legacy. He has won numerous art awards at home and abroad over the years and held multiple calligraphy exhibitions. In 1986, he founded a calligraphy workshop called Kang Huai Calligraphy Workshop.

Kang Run-zhi decided to follow in their footsteps and became a calligrapher. In addition to preserving the raditional art of calligraphy and creating calligraphy plaques,he applied what he had learned in college as a multimedia design student—including the concepts and use of visual aesthetics, digital multimedia, interactive media, etc.—to calligraphy. By incorporating calligraphy into the logo design, practicing art co-creation, and using Facebook fan pages for promotion, he breathed new life into the art of calligraphy, imbuing it with a new and contemporary meaning.
